Contemporary Art Buyers Cautious After Wall Street Dips

May 17, 2017

“If Wall Street hadn’t taken a dive, there would have been fireworks,” said David Benrimon, a New York dealer. “While the sale was strong over all, it did change the mood among American bidders, and these contemporary sales are about Americans.”

Like a Local: The Best Art Galleries on the Upper East Side

"The veteran namesake owner of this gallery worked with legendary pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. The exhibition “Idolized” featured the iconic silkscreen portraits of Marilyn Monroe along less frequently exhibited pieces like “Moonwalk,” one of Warhol’s last unsigned pieces before his death in 1987. Recent exhibits beyond the pop art sphere have included a solo show of Columbian painter Fernando Botero and a series of Pablo Picasso’s female portraits that put the artist’s infamous womanizing in the context of his work."

Adrien Brody on Why It’s Never Too Late to Become an Artist

It’s November, and we’re sitting in Shanghai at ART021 art fair as Brody recounts this return to a dormant creativity he had often thought about picking back up but never got around to independently. “Painting was something that I loved and dreamt of coming back to one day but never did. I think a lot of people have that: maybe they were talented at guitar or they used to sing or they used to draw,” says the 43-year-old actor, glancing at the works he was presenting at the fair in a collaboration with the nonprofit organization Teach for China. Brody had donated one of the pieces—a lacquered painting of a fish, covered in drips of paint à la Pollock—to the charity, which sends Chinese and American graduates to teach in schools in rural China. This week, similar work is featured as part of David Benrimon’s booth at Art Miami, as part of Miami Art Week.

Christie’s Mild-Mannered Imp/Mod Closer

5/13/2016

New York dealer David Benrimon was thrilled with his purchase, Marc Chagall’s “Amoureux dans le ciel ou Village enneigé (Vitebsk),” in oil on board from circa 1928-30, which he got for $1,145,000 (est. $700,000-1 million).

“I snatched it!,” crowed the dealer.

Overall, “it wasn’t a bad sale,” Benrimon said, assessing the auction as a whole as he exited the salesroom. “I thought it would be much worse.” He credited the better-than-he-expected results with 11th-hour lowering of reserves.
